While the City Passes By
Enquanto a Cidade Passa
In this painting, I sought to capture a moment of stillness within the everyday movement of the city. A woman sits at an outdoor café with a cup before her while the street continues around her. The cigarette suspended in her hand, her gaze directed beyond the composition, and her relaxed posture suggest a moment that belongs entirely to her.
I am interested in the contrast between the rhythm outside and our inner sense of time. The city continues, people pass by and light moves through the street, yet for a few minutes the figure seems to exist outside that flow.
I worked primarily with a palette knife, exploring the materiality and impasto of the paint, while geometric fragmentation shifts and repeats parts of both the figure and the surrounding space. Her face, hand and other elements appear across subtly displaced planes, as though several moments within the same pause were simultaneously preserved in the painting.
Warm tones in the skin, architecture and sunlight contrast with deep blacks and the lighter accents of the table and coffee cup. Rather than simply portraying a woman at a café, I wanted to paint something both ordinary and increasingly rare: the experience of remaining still for a moment while the city continues to pass by.
