The Elegance of Summer Light
A Elegância da Luz de Verão
In this painting, I seek to evoke the elegance of a time that seems suspended in memory. The figures, hats, dresses and summer light suggest the atmosphere of another era, yet the image is deliberately fragmented, moving away from a purely narrative or nostalgic representation.
I worked primarily with a palette knife, building the surface through successive layers of paint, texture and relief. Geometric planes interrupt and repeat parts of the figures, like fragments of a memory being reconstructed. The painting moves between definition and dissolution, between what we recognise and what we can only sense.
Light plays a central role, flowing through ivory, golden and deep green tones and bringing the composition together. Rather than depicting one specific moment, I wanted to evoke a feeling: the fleeting beauty of a summer afternoon, the elegance of a gesture, and the remarkable way memory can preserve certain images long after the moment itself has disappeared.
