Where the City Becomes Music

Onde a Cidade se Torna Música

Acrylic Palette Knife painting120 × 60 cmHeight × width · canvas

In this painting, I wanted to capture the moment when music transforms our experience of a city. A saxophonist seated at the edge of the street becomes the quiet centre of the composition, while the architecture, light and movement around him seem to take on the rhythm of what he is playing.

I worked primarily with a palette knife, building the figure and surrounding space through layers of paint, impasto and texture. Geometric planes and subtle shifts fragment both the musician and the urban landscape, as though several moments were coexisting within the same image.

The warm tones of the city contrast with the blues of his clothing and the golden reflections of the saxophone, drawing the eye towards the instrument. I am particularly interested in this relationship between sound and image: a painting is silent, yet it can suggest rhythm, pause, intensity and even the sensation of a melody.

Rather than simply portraying a street musician, I wanted to capture that fleeting moment when someone begins to play and, for a while, the space around him seems to belong to the music.
